My Top 10 Favorite Practice Building Podcasts
Fun fact about Michelle Button… I am ADDICTED to podcasts, and a sucker for a good Top Ten of anything!
I love books too, but my ADHD often gets in the way for me to actually FINISH a book. Before podcasts were a “thing” I used to listen to audiobooks in the car and found it was a huge productivity win for my practice growth. As a busy working mom with 2 kids, constantly in the car, I found this to be a great way to utilize the time to learn about business that I wasn't able to find any other time in my schedule.
Today, there are hundreds of podcasts focused on all aspects of business management and even specific to therapists in private practice. Although I don’t have my own yet, it’s also something on my THINK BIG list for sure! In the meantime, here is the list of my Top 10 favorite podcasts (in no particular order, because that would be WAY too hard to choose):
The Group Practice Exchange Podcast with Maureen Werrbach, LCPC
I have to be honest, not only is this my most frequently listened-to podcast, but Maureen Werrbach is one of my favorite people in my business world! In my mind, she is the OG in the group practice universe on SO MANY levels, including binge-able podcasts! If you do not know who she is, check out her Facebook group, The Group Practice Exchange, and her membership site, The Exchange. She is the leader in the group practice world and has taught me SO much through the years!
The Productive Therapist with Uriah Guilford, MFT
Another one of my favorite people in the practice universe is Uriah Guilford! Although we have never met IRL, I feel like I have known him for years through various online groups we are both a part of. Not only is he an awesome person, he is a productivity wizard, which is one of my love languages! Not only is he a successful group practice owner and therapist in CA, he is the owner of The Productive Therapist, a VA company that specializes in working with therapists. His podcast focuses on productivity hacks and cool tools and resources to manage your practice smoothly and efficiently!
Group Work by Katie Keates May
Another groundbreaker in the practice world in my mind, Katie K May! She is the owner of Creative Healing, a teen support center in PA specializing in DBT, and also the owner of Become a Group Guru, her consulting business where she helps therapists start and scale groups in their practice. Aside from just being a super cool person, she uses her podcast to interview various clinicians that are currently running groups and shares lots of tips on creating, managing, and running all things related to groups in your practice.
Abundant Practice Podcast with Allison Puryear
Another fan favorite is Allison Puryear who is a therapist and owner Abundance Practice Building and her membership site The Abundance Party focused on all the things we need to know as therapists looking to start or scale a private practice. Allison has a great way of normalizing challenges and fears common tho therapists starting out and I love her sense of humor! A must for me with podcasts!
Online Marketing Made Easy with Amy Porterfield
I don't know about you, but there is nothing easy about online marketing for me! I am a networker at heart and when digital marketing started to become a “thing”, I found myself super overwhelmed. Amy Porterfield is an entrepreneur specializing in helping business owners build their email lists, and create online training courses to sell. On her podcast, she discusses all kinds of topics related to getting your digital self organized and using this platform to get a bigger reach to your potential clients and others seeking your services. She also is totally obsessed with her dog, Scout, as I am with my yellow lab, Ellie!
Business Made Simple with Donald Miller
Again, I'm not sure there is anything SIMPLE about business, but Donald Miller sure makes it easier! Donald is an author, speaker and business owner and probably has three books that would make my Top Ten list, Building a Story Brand, Marketing Made Simple and Business Made Simple. He just has a way to break down marketing in a way that makes sense and is totally relatable. He writes about speaking to your ideal client and focusing on their “pain points”. This was a huge shift for me initially, as I always thought marketing was about promoting ourselves and our services. Give this podcast a listen, then go on amazon and order his books to help stock your business library!
Therapy for Your Money with Julie Herres
I know, no one likes to talk or think about money…. But unfortunately, to be successful in business, we need to get REALLY comfortable with it! In the beginning of my practice, I would avoid my numbers like the plague. I had no idea what was coming in or going out and was just happy to know I had money in the bank! Julie Herres, the owner of Green Oak Accounting has a great way of discussing all things financial in our therapy practice and not getting overwhelmed with numbers.
Radical Candor- The Podcast with Kim Scott, Jason Rosoff, and Amy Sandler
This podcast was born from a favorite leadership book of mine, Radical Candor by Kim Scott. Both the book and podcast focus on all things related to leadership and how to be clear and kind with your team at the same time. After learning I was guilty of Ruinous Empathy at times, this podcast gives great quick tips and discussions around common challenges in leadership and practical tools to help you thrive as a leader in your business. I also find it generally helpful with improving communication in general. A true must-have for anyone with a group practice or thinking about starting a group practice.
Profit First Nation Podcast- Hosted by Danielle Mulvey, Featuring Mike Michalowicz
I purposefully put this one lower on the list because I have been accused of being in love with Mike Michalowicz. Which may be true, but only because his book, Profit First, has had the BIGGEST impact on my business. As I mentioned above, money management was not my strength in the beginning. My challenge wasn’t overspending, it was not knowing how much was coming in and going out and WHAT to do with it. Profit First teaches a system for knowing your numbers and allocating your income into different categories to manage cash management and expenses in your practice. It is REQUIRED reading for all of my coaching clients. Look for my entire blog post on Profit First and why I am OBSESSED with Mike and this book!
Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman
Ok, I know this is not a practice-building podcast, but one of my favorites and couldn’t resist! Dax Shepard is an actor and writer and uses his podcast to do long-form interviews with all kinds of interesting people from celebrities to politicians to leading mental health experts like John Gottman and Esther Perel! He is open and candid about his ongoing struggles with addictions and mental health, as well as his marriage to another fan favorite Kristen Bell. Check it out for some good information and often much-needed comic relief after a long day at the office!
Trust me, if you are not using podcasts as a way to learn about business, marketing, practice management, and all the things you need to know to be a successful entrepreneur, you are seriously MISSING OUT!
Check out some of the ones I listed, I promise you won’t be disappointed! For all of you hard-core book lovers, don't worry… I will follow up with Top Ten Practice Building books as well! Do you have a favorite go-to podcast? If so, shoot me an email, I’m always on the hunt for new ones to check out!
Happy Podcasting!
